Wisteria

My Wisteria won't bloom. It is 3 years old, has grown and has good foliage, spreading well, but sadly no flowers. I've never pruned it or fed it. It was bought from a nursery and was a reasonable size when planted. It's in full sun. Will it ever bloom? is there something I should be doing to help?

This is really an often asked question it really depends on what you paid for the plant when you bought it.

Anything around £15 or less would mean it was a seed raised plant. These can take many years to flower often as much as 15 -20 years.

If you paid around the £20 mark it should of been a grafted plant and these will flower very quickly in at least a year or two.

All I can suggest is to keep one or two leading shoots the strongest from near the top and tie these in to make the framework to cover the area required.

All other growth should be pruned to two or three leaves from the main stem.

This has the effect of creating new growth known as spurs which will develop flower buds for the following season.

This should be done during the summer months.
